CAPULETTI E MONTECHHI

RWCMD | February 2024 | Conceptual Opera Design

"I Capuleti e i Montecchi (The Capulets and the Montagues) is an Italian opera in two acts by Vincenzo Bellini. The libretto by Felice Romani was a reworking of the story of Romeo and Juliet for an opera by Nicola Vaccai called Giulietta e Romeo and based on the play of the same name by Luigi Scevola written in 1818, thus an Italian source rather than taken directly from William Shakespeare."

DESIGN CONCEPT

The idea was to set the opera in New Orleans rather than Italy to bring in freshness and mixing it up with a little bollywood by making Romeo ethnically Indian. Along with that, adding both festivals 'Mardi Gras' and 'Diwali'. The design of the set is heavily dependent on inculcating all the locations of the opera into one huge villa whose architecture is New Orleans style and creating a symmetry which gives the iconic seperation scene and both Romeo and Juliet are facing each other on different levels of the villa. Most parts of the acts are done in the courtyard and there are private, semi private and public spaces in the set.
